Joseph Wolfsthal: violin-1928-He died young (1899-1931). It is a pity that there are only a few recordings of him, because he belongs to the top of the violinists with his intense and beautiful warm tone.

  • Nice, thanks

  • This is justj wonderful.I've always loved Wolfstahl's playing for his warmth of tone and deep passionate expression.

  • Wonderful playing, wonderful composition! Beautiful

  • Wonderful.

  • WOW

Upon further research, I've found that this is a transcription of the Air from Mattheson's harpsichord suite in C minor.

    Sounds better than the original!

  • which one of his sonatas is this from? I know its from his "The Usable Virtuoso" which is a collection of 12 sonatas for Violin or Traverse Flute, but its gonna be a digging through the manuscript finding which one it is!!!

  • This music is so haunting. I love it. I only wish that the continuo was played by a harpsichord instead of a piano.

  • Thank you for posting this. I did not know of Wolfsthal before. His playing of this is reminiscent of Clara Rockmore's version on the theremin, with its many beautiful slides and shifts.
