A sample of news copy in American Morse Code at 27-words per minute via a J. H. Bunnell Box Relay and Western Union Sounder. While there are several examples of telegraph sounders on "You Tube, most show the International (Continental) Code in use and the typical "CQ" common to Amateur Radio. In this demonstration, one can hear the American Morse Code, which was used in North America for railroad and commercial telegraphy.

During the first part of the video, one hears Morse via the Box Relay only. During the second part, both local sounder and relay are operating. Different circuits are selectable via the Western Electric "jack box," which has been modified to include a loop supply and interface circuit for operation via the Morse KOB system (www.morsekob.org). Also, for those unfamiliar with telegraph instruments, it should be noted that the wooden "reflector" in which the local sounder is installed is properly referred to as a "resonator."

For more information on telegraphy, please visit the Morse Telegraph Club (MTC) web page at:

www.morsetelegraphclub.org.

MTC is an association of telegraphers and individuals with an interest in promoting the history and traditions of Morse Telegraphy.

A relay is an electric switch. You use a manual switch to operate a 2nd electro-magnetic switch. By doing this a person can handle a low voltage / low current circuit to turn off & on a high current high voltage circuit that you would not want to get your hands on.

  • excelente video felicidades, yo fui telegrafista de los nacionales de mexico hasta 1997 fecha en que se privatizo y aunque no es el mismo alfabeto que usabamos creeme que me trajo gratos recuerdos.

  • Excellent video.. I have been thinking about buying a sounder. Is there a way of putting this inline with a rig to hear the code via sounder rather than AF?

  • QRS hi hi

  • Excellent railroad/Western Union Morse code sending. When I worked for the CNR SP CPR we used . . instead of __ for zero, even thought the long dash is correct. Best regards Lee Mason MA at KA
