also, I think your argument about knowledge and evidence as shown through your story of the farmer and brains is not valid. Though I have never seen or smelled my own brains, if I really wanted to I could get someone to cut open my skull and take out a chunk of my brain to smell and take a picture of my brain to see. Or I could see it with a mirror. Hell has never been seen by anyone. It cannot in any physical way be tested for. There is not way to detect it.
you say there is a visceral need for justice that cannot be satisfied here in reality, but I would say there can be justice relative for each individual person. For one person sending the criminal who hurt them, to jail is justice for them. For someone else, torturing the person who hurt them, is proper justice. Fro islamic terrorists, suicide bombing is justice for them. I think different ways of dealing out justice satisfy that need for different people. I don't think Hell is necessary.
