The city was founded (circa 315 BC) by the Macedonian king Cassander after his wife, Alexander's half-sister, Thessalonike (Θεσσαλία+νίκη=Thessaly+victor
y). Philip had named his daughter thus to commemorate his victory in the Crocus Field. The city was a cradle of the greek culture; Cyril and Methodius, who created the slavic alphabet, were from there. During the christian Roman era (i.e. Byzantium) it was co-reigning/συμβασιλεύουσα city after Constantinople.
