Baltimore's Inner Harbor is one of the most photographed and visited areas of the city. It has been one of the major seaports in the United States since the 1700s.
Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse located here is the oldest surviving screw-pile lighthouse built in 1856. The design eliminated the need of underwater masonry foundations to support a lighthouse. From 1856 until 1919 , keepers at seven foot knoll lived in the lighthouse along with their families. Between 1919 and 1948 keepers worked in pairs, with each receiving 8 days of shore leave per month.
Lighthouse was automated in 1949 and it was not manned after that. The light was maintained by coast guard but the structure fell victim to its age and the elements. The Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse was replaced by a simple steel skeleton tower in the late 1980s and declared surplus property.
The coast guard donated the lighthouse to Baltimore city in 1989 to be preserved as historical landmark.
