I believe that the chasis' & frames from '73 on up into the middle '80's are probably all the same. This truck came from the factory with a 350 diesel engine and all the mounts for the 455 & tranny lined right up. I don't see where it would be any different on a '78, provided it currently has a 350 in it. You'll also find that the radiator hoses from the 350 will also work on the 455. The only other problem encountered was moving the AC compressor left to right.

The tailgate came from the factory that way. Frankly, if I wanted to go through the expense, I would remove the trim completely and just paint the taligate the same color as the rest of the truck. I've seen a couple that were done that way and I think they look pretty sharp.

The engine was already in the truck when I bought it. As I was told by the previous owner, the truck came from the factory with a diesel engine and the easiest conversion is to put an Olds engine in it as everything lines up, (motor mounts, etc.). I don't know what the going rate is to rebuild a 455 these days but I would just Google 455 Olds engine and see what you come up with.

I made the tach mount from a piece of galvanized metal. I cut it to size, put it in a vise and bent it to the shape that I needed. Then I painted it with Rust-Oleum Black Satin paint. Once it was made, I loosened the Phillips screws that hold the dash bezel in place, slid the mount between the dash pad & the bezel, and then tightened the screws back up to hold it in place.
