The first weekend in August each year, French Quarter Festivals Inc. throws a big party in New Orleans to celebrate the birth and legacy of Louis Armstrong - its called the Satchmo Summerfest.
There are free concerts all weekend long at the Old Mint. On Sunday there is a Jazz Mass at the Historic St. Augustine's Church in Treme. Since it's dedication in 1842, it has been a church of the free black citizens of New Orleans, welcoming both free and slave as worshippers. Many of the founding fathers of jazz worshipped and played music at this church.
As the service ends, the band leads the congregation out into the street for a Second Line parade through the French Quarter. Several other bands and krewes join in as the crowd dances down Gov. Nichols Street to Rampart, and up Esplanade to the Mint for a day of free concerts featuring the best in New Orleans jazz.
If you've never been to New Orleans, or don't know what a Second Line is . . . this video will give you some idea. :-)
