Mexico's battle to stop drug gangs using the country as a trafficking route is nothing new in the Americas - in the 1970s, cocaine was exported to the US from Colombia.

With Washington's help, Bogota was eventually able to weaken the cartels but not stop the trade, now focused on Mexico, home to the most powerful drug cartels, where the fight continues.

Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from Bogota, Colombia's capital, on the battle against drug trafficking.

  • Tens of thousands dead, hundred of thousands in prison. The war on drugs is a failure. The entire hemisphere needs to just legalize. Anything is better than this.

  • Eh, this drug hurts the poor ppl where it's grown most of all. Why? Because instead of people concentrating on helping to grow their countries economy and culture through traditional means, they opt for an easy way. This easy way always leads to self destruction, not only for their country, but most of all for local communities and their families. Education is the way.

  • manada de petardos cuando van a aprender que se dice ColOmbia, no Columbia!!!

  • the first step to exterminate that problem completely is not legalizing but people take matter into their own hands under any means necessary.

second reconstruct the prison system. to kill of worst of worst burdens.and make prison a real hell.remove healthcare and resources like food, beds, etc

third instead of arresting/deporting kill on spot if known as drug member.
