What motivates students to learn? Why not ask students! I did just that for this Google Teacher Academy video application.

In his provacative work, Punished by Rewards, Alfie Kohn writes, "...children do not need to be motivated. From the beginning they are hungry to make sense of their world. Given an environment in which they don't feel controlled and in which they are encouraged to think about what they are doing (rather than how well they are doing it), students of any age will generally exhibit an abundance of motivation and a healthy appetite for challenge. ...The job of educators is neither to make students motivated nor to sit passively; it is to set up the conditions that make learning possible."

I am a teacher. I am a facilitator of learning, not a dictator of knowledge.

  • I haven't looked at this video in a while. I put it together 2 years ago as part of the Google Teacher Academy application process. We had one minute to do a video on student motivation. Imagine having only 1 minute to accomplish something that tomes continue to be written about! Luckily, I was chosen to attend. What an amazing experience, one that changed how I teach! And now I'm connected with a whole network of Google Certified Teachers.

  • is headed to Google school in December! So excited!

  • All I got from that conclusion is networking. I guess it's true that it's better to be in contact with more people. Maybe.

  • @UltimateXr11 yap!! :D

  • thumbs up if u searched for motivate me

  • This video would be awesome if I could read most of what is written on the pieces of paper :(

I would have filmed each student seperately and with a still camera and then edited the cuts in. sweeping from student to student like that is problematic, the camera has trouble picking it up when it is moving.

  • wow nicce anna =D

  • Thanks for the compliment! I like yours too!
