Scene and duet from Bel Canto Opera's 2007 production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Pamina assures Papageno that in time he will find his mate.
DUET:
PAMINA: Love prises the heart when least suspected
In dourest minds, love finds its way
PAPAGENO:And tears you apart if you are rejected. No one's protected from being love's prey
BOTH: Love rules the souls of all mankind...
Opening our eyes...or rendering us blind.
PAMINA: When cupid fires darts, fain hearts are affected,
but whose he'll choose, no one can foretell.
PAPAGENO: Though Eros brings solace to those selected,
for beaux neglected, loveless is hell!
BOTH:'Tis nature's plan, assigned by fate:
In time, each man will find his mate.
Find his mate, assigned by fate.
Man and mate, when bound in love,
reach the gate of heav''n above.

  • Thanks Leporello for clearing up the misunderstanding. And for your kind remarks about Bel Canto Opera productions.

  • I want only to support your organisation. I think you create marvellous productions. Particularily this one. Again I apologise if my comment seemed a bit offensive toward you but I meant no offense what so ever.

  • Sorry. I meant that in the most light hearted way possible. I didn't mean I was offended that Papageno is Irish. I think its great. I was suggesting that I could have been offended that someone would consider a Scottish accent to be like and Irish Accent. Again, in the most light hearted way possible. I too get annoyed that people argue so much over the internet

  • Offended? On what conceivable grounds? Because the singer is Irish, and therefore performs Papageno with an Irish accent? Why on earth shouldn't a gamekeeper be Irish? What is wrong with people today that they seem to take offense at anything and everything. Pitiful and ridiculous.

  • Irish. And being Irish, I find that slightly offensive.

  • This Papageno is Irish.

  • Yes, this has the range of almost 2 octaves. The lowest note being middle C and the highest note being the High B flats cadenzas. And they took a lot such liberty with the translations.

  • Very beautiful voices..but very forced, it would be nice if they put phrasing higher than individual pitches! It's very nice for an English language interpretation, usually the only good ones are German!
