CO2 does not melt. Dry ice doesn't melt. Its a thing called sublimination, when it goes straight to Gas from a solid.

Same with me : My first PVC tube blew up in my hands, it turned into sharp shrapnel. I finally used PVC anyway : but reinforced it by sliding straight "coupling" tubes (they're tougher that the pipe itself), so I had 2 layers. I also reinforced the bottom by pouring concrete and adding screws through holes before the stuff had hardened (otherwise your canon might be more dangerous at the back than it is at the front).

do you think that thick pvc pipe would work just as well as the drive shaft

It works the same, but PVC is pretty dangerous to use. We used to have a PVC pipe but it kept exploding when we would fire the gun.
The problem with that is that PVC doesn't show up in x-rays, so surgeons have to perform "exploratory surgery".
Use metal if you can.
