Most of lie on a fairly regular basis, and on some level it may not be a bad thing. Paul Root Wolpe asks do we want to eliminate lies, even those that may be necessary?

  • I totally disagree.

  • If you're society, or relationship, etc. is based on lies, then yes, you can't eliminate lies. But if you want truth, absolute truth, and are willing to not be offended when the truth is told, then lies can be done away with.

  • Game Theory-speaking, "no one lies" is NOT a Nash Equilibrium and hence is not a stable state of affair --- anyone can gain by lying when all others don't lie. Thus, unless it is possible to eliminate such gain, it is not realistic even to strive for a society in which no one lies.

Ipso facto, it is much more realistic to not take other's words at their face value. Always expect and suspect that others will and may lie to us.

  • How about a US GOVT based on the TRUTH.... How about TRUTH in REPORTING... CBS NBC ABC ALL SLANT THE NEWS to pit their own POLITICAL AGEND

If you can not get the truth from the News.. the I would NOT BELIVE anything that they say.

  • @Safat7 I agree with what you say. After all, if someone tells me the truth in a constructive way, then i can reassess myself and grow. Here's where i agree with Mr. Wolpe: I find it interesting that people continually say they want the truth, and yet most of the world's population believes in some organized religion or another. Humans are taught from an early age to fear death. And then they are taught to cope with this fear by believing in life-after-death without proof that it exists.

  • after you. Things of trees are not things of brick.

  • Telling lies is a part of human nature, why eliminate it?

  • " Brick wall, BRICK WALL. I must think of a brick wall..."

  • Lies have always been equal with Truth.

Each may wield love or pain. Not all truths should be uttered. Many lies are compassionate.

As receiver, we should strive to understand the intent behind either.

When telling both, strive to do no harm and to always practice loving kindness.

This is the way of both strength and compassion.

  • Without knowing what "is", we don't know if a person is speaking of what is, or what isn't. I can't tell if the guy talking to me is deviating from a truth or making something up totally.
