I think this is probably more like it was originally written. More brass. Beautiful in many variations though.

Amazing quality for such a primitive recording!! Thanks so much for posting. Delightful, and a step back into history.

Compuesta por un Hispanoamericano!!!

The melody of this waltz was used for the song 'Loveliest night of the year', sung by Ann Blyth in the MGM film The Greatr Caruso, and later achieved increased popularity through Mario Lanza's recording of the song.

Excellent voice for a mechanic gramophone!

Thanks for posting. I've heard this tune for years, especially on cartoons about trapeze artists and sailors --not realizing the composer was one of my all time favorites, John Phillips Sousa!

Silentbacchus, Bravo! Just the ticket for a soft spring day. ;-) Regards, J.
It's actually not by Sousa, it's Sousa's band playing on the recording. Here's a super brief bio on the composer Rosas-
SOBRE LAS OLAS (OVER THE WAVES) WAS WRITTEN BY MUSIC COMPOSER JUVENTINO ROSAS. HE WAS A MEXICAN-INDIAN. VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT HIM.
HE DIED AT THE AGE OF 26. 1868-1894
NO LYRICS WERE WRITTEN.
