Plumis have recently launched Automist, an innovative fire protection system designed to integrate seamlessly into residential properties as a lower-cost alternative to sprinklers. Triggered by a heat alarm, the unique system transforms a standard monobloc tap into a water mist suppression device. Automist uses a high-pressure pump to provide whole-room protection for a fire-prone location or exit route. Automist can be retrofitted without major disruption and is almost invisible in kitchens and kitchen/diners, but is also available in configurations suited to a variety of other locations.

Recently named one of the top 15 inventions of the last decade in an exhibition at the British library as well as scooping the prize for top invention in the James Dyson Award 2009, Automist was inspired by insight work at the Royal College of Art with London's Fire and Rescue Services. The design team highlighted the lack of appropriate fire suppression products for residential use and that few existing solutions focused on key risk areas -- for example around 65% of fires start in the kitchen. Fire alarm and suppression products are traditionally seen as "industrial grade" solutions that cost thousands of pounds per dwelling, impose severe aesthetic constraints, and do not target the highest risk areas of the home. Plumis was founded to create targeted, elegant, but effective alternatives.

  • how about for the other parts of the house? :(

  • @psnavata Check out plumis.co.uk we do cover other areas of the house now

  • won't flood your kitchen ?? I'm curious to see that.

  • @paul9511

The system uses about a 10th of the amount of water used by a traditional sprinkler system and as most of the water is suspended in the air or evaporated by the fire it minimises runoff and consequential water damage.

  • @paul9511

If you check our website plumis.co.uk you can see it working

  • lets see how that will work in a grease fire

  • The video demonstration shows water mist suppressing a chip pan fire. It is a 200ml of Soya oil after self ignition at 360 C.
