New Year's Day 2012! Apologies upfront for the jerky videography - I promise the next will be better. A Winter temperature of 25° here in Phoenix, AZ !!! REMINDER - almost all measurements are metric here, so convert to English & Fahrenheit for yourself !!! We start with a view from the Grand Canal, a part of the salt River Project, which provides water & power for about half of the 3.5 million residents here in the Valley of the Sun. And today, you can most certainly see how we acquired that moniker !!! We are less than 100m at the canal here from the winter garden. It's quite special to have such easy access to this popular hiking & bicycling feature which runs for over 30km across our valley. This canal was dug by native Americans over 2000 years ago, had filled back in after being abandoned & was rediscovered & re-excavated after rediscovery in the 1880s by the area's earliest European settlers. The elevated mountainous areas NE of Phoenix are protected national forest lands, protected because they are the watershed for our valley. Nature is a much more delicate balance than many wish to believe - without the steady flow of water from these Eastern mountains, civilization here in Phoenix would cease to exist. Hope you enjoy the history along with the garden. Please leave me some feedback! chuck

  • Beautiful garden with beautiful colours but ....... we got a bit dizzy when watching ;) Looks like the cameraman has been celebrating New Year's day a bit too much ? ;-) (Usually, objects filmed move, here the camera itself moves (tooooooooo much !) ....... Hi Chuck, hope you read these comments as "positive meant criticism" :-) Your friend in Flanders where temps also (unusually) high = 15°C !! (Warmest NY's eve and night EVER here ) Walt

  • @Socratess2007 Perhaps you did not read my write-up where my very first words were an apology for what you describe? ;) I loaded it before previewing, it was already take #3, I was MORTIFIED when I saw it online after uploading !!! But I ain't gonna redo it, I promised the next would be better. It probably would have helped if I'd taken it off 'zoom' after the first shot of the mountains. chuck

  • @chkjns Well, you still have 364 days this year to do better ;-)) !!

  • @Socratess2007 Perhaps you could post a video of your own back garden & show us amateurs how it's done? ;)

  • Thank you for this and Happy New Year !!

  • @solopolo Thanks for watching. I felt do bad when I saw how much the camera bounced as I walked. I've still got a lot to learn! It was truly amazing how beautiful it was out today, so clear, we could see the moon rising above Camelback Mountain at 1300 hours. I don't know when I've ever seen the moon out at mid-day before! chuck

  • Nice video...Is Phoenix hot all year? I have asthma and will probably have to leave New England. I have been looking at Prescott as a possible destination. Merci....

  • @chkjns Deal ! but....... give me some time to clean it first because OUR winter weather does not allow for much gardening this time of year :) !

  • looks great and even thoufh I missed the moon today at that time I know how amazing it can look in our desert sky. Hows the backyard look currently? With all the abundance of wild flowers in the front is it safe to say the back is a forest of some sort, lol :)

  • Very nice man
