One thing I noticed is that the NCOs treat the recruits like they have a brain. When I was in USMC boot camp the thing that got to me most was not that it was hard or the DIs were "mean", it was them constantly acting as if we were all complete dumbshits. I mean, yeah, doing things "by the numbers" has its benefits as far as instilling obedience to orders, but jesus, putting on my socks on command is just stupid. The Paras do a better job of instilling self-responsibility than the Marines do.
