We use fruit flies because its cheaper than a large animal.. Aside from being a hilarious real life contradictions to what she said earlier about allocating funds to helping kids with autism, its an oversight as to why we use fruit flies. Fruit flies are a STANDARD part of biological and biomedical research. It's not done only in Paris- it's been done in research labs all over the world for many, many years. Any standard college biology or genetics textbook refer to research findings that have come from fruit flies- it goes far beyond the one finding that Olbermann talks about, also.

I'm a graduate student in Biomedical Science at UNC. Fruit fly research is important because it is used to understand genetics, among other things. Fruit flies are not human. But they can be used to understand general concepts that can be applied to humans.

Science that takes decades to master might not be obvious at a glance.
