  • Not a problem :)

I didn't know about the change myself until an FIE ref corrected me so I'm not surprised you didn't know, I guess it was just to make things easier when calling to the piste.

  • Thanks for the rules update.

From the level of tournaments I attend, I know the refs having problems, when the lefty turns his back to them, so we still apply the old rule.

Didn´t want to imply any cheating to these guys, but I was surprised to see this on a high level tournament.

  • Very simple. It used to be a rule that the lefty was on the right (yes, it was a rule), but the rule was changed, and certainly isn't necessary here. The referee has the aid of two other watching officials (you see em from time to time) and a video. I don't struggle refereeing like this without those extra things, so not surprising these guys don't.

  • yes that is the basic rule. Normally if the first called is left-handed he is expected to tell the judge and take position to the other side, so that he doesn´t turn his back to the referee.

  • good question. i think the fencer who is called out first for a bout must take postion to the ref's right hand side so the ref knows which one is which that way.

  • why is the left-handed fencer on the right side from the judge?
