I am studying this film for year 11 Advanced English, and think this final scene symbolises Ouisa realisation of the lack of meaning in her life, walking away from what has made her such a superficial person. As she says moments before this scene I am a collage of unaccounted for brushstrokes". Slapping the hand of God in the chapel was of no true importance to her, until she finally understands during this scene. The importance of experience, of doing something with her life that has meaning.
I have thought about this, but cannot come to any clear conclusion. I suppose anyone can create an explanation, but I'll always be unsure of what that particular moment - coming just moments before the closing credits - was really trying to say.
She is like a Kandinsky (sp)...there are two sides to both the painting and Ouisa.
