a rare and hard to find oldie. theme song of the movie birdman of alcatraz. sound quality not the best. my tribute to my brother who introduced me to pop music and guitar. welcome any posting of the version with burt lancaster doing the dialogue.
He sits in his cell and he stares at the floor, the walls, the ceiling, the bars on the door.
And at times he can hear far away far away the song of a bird from an old yesterday.
A bird that he found unable to fly
alone in the cold almost ready to die.
A man who once killed,a man who must dwell for the rest of his life all alone in a cell.
Oh the poor little bird he took back to his cell and held it and nursed it until it was well.
For the rest of his life there will be six iron bars, six iron bars between him and the stars.
But the poor little bird didn't know it could fly and much too afraid too fearful to try.
And the bird drew strength from a man who was strong.
And soon spread its wings and it burst into song.
He sits in his cell and he stares at the floor, the walls, the ceiling, the bars on the door.
And at times, he can hear far away far away the song of a bird from an old yesterday.
At times, he can hear far away far away the song of a bird from an old yesterday.
I have the 45 of this by the Highwaymen, sounds exactly the same only the narration is done by Burt Lancaster. I'll have to try and dig it out and play it again.I used to play it to death.Thanks.

This song and the movie paint a very sympathetic picture of Robert Stroud who was the Birdman of Alcatraz. He was not really allowed to keep birds while at Alcatraz--his work on birds was at Ft Levenworth. In actuality Robert Stroud was a homicidal creep (he murdered two men) who wrote homosexual kitty porn in his cell and jail was where he belonged. But I still like the song.

@gotaiwai I'm a guy of your age and like you love this song so much that I've been searching it for more than 45 years but in vain. It is a golden oldie song that unfortunately has never been put into broadcasting. Thanks heaven, I finally got it today.

Although this song came out in the summer of 62 as did the movie version, it was never played in the movie. I don't remember the Highwaymen as the original artist . Any help out there???
