@7mortons a "monster" is basically like a rover. He has no set position, flows to the ball and makes pays. Often he is a blitzer. a monster 4-4 is basically a 4-3 with 1 safety and a blitzing linebacker

Usually "Monster" refers to a field side defense. This means that the "Monster" is a player that always lines up on the field side. The difference would be in a 4-4 the strong side could be to the wide side of the field, or the short side of the field depending on which side the TE is on. A "Monster" defense would use the wide side of the field as the indicator of which side the strong side of the defense is. i believe a monster back is similar to a strong saftey, one who is used to blitz on the weak side kinda like a quick player who can drop in and out of coverage when needed
