The Timepiece is the final piece of coursework for my 3D Animation module at the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus.

Up until now I've only ever used Maya to create still images so this is my first proper animated short. I enjoyed making it and am already in the process of developing future ideas.

  • That is mint, what a great imagination, guess what, I'm doing the same module in a months time....eeek

  • Thanks mate, I remember your really cool artwork from 2D Design or whatever that module was called.

Looking forward to see what you do with your animation project!

  • amazing how much did you from his tutorial???

  • sorry I don't understand your question.

  • oh yea btw how did you do the lighting so nice

  • To light most of my scenes I used a three point lighting system which is commonly used in the film industry.

Basically I'd have two directional lights as my key light (the one that cast main shadows), and a fill light... I then used either a point light or ambient light as a back light.

    Hope that helps, :)

  • Wow very nice!

  • The movie is built up of 12 scenes (seperate Maya files)... and they were then rendered individually using Maya Software (would of used mental ray but it would of taken ages).

I left the scenes to render over night and had to set times on my alarm so I could get up and set my computer to render the next scene. It must of taken 12-18 hours though to render it fully.

Hope that helps answer your question :)

  • hey 3d student 03 how did you put so many objects in 1 world and render it so fast?(assuming.)

  • Yea, I tryed that lecture, i did it first time, but i just didnt get it after that :s im not really into animation (yet), i just like creating things via modelling..Thanks man. Good luck with youre course too :)
