(Note: there is a slight audio/video sync problem in this video. The discrepancy is about a second, so it's not that bad.)

My dad was at this game, so he's been able to relate some of it to me. Any Buckeye interested in, but unaware of, what this game meant to the 1979 season should watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBSCg5tSEHk

Simply put, this game and drive in particular catapulted the Buckeyes barnstorming through the Big Ten, beating Michigan in Ann Arbor and making it to the Rose Bowl where a last second loss to USC cost the Buckeyes the national title. To this day, I still carry a grudge against Charles White for it, even though I wasn't alive for this. I admit: I carry weird grudges.

I know Buckeyes either don't know who he is or have tried to forget him, but there is no denying how amazing Art Schlichter was in scarlet and gray. His legal problems notwithstanding, I think he's arguably the best QB Ohio State has ever had.

And, yes, that is Mike Guess (defensive back for Ohio State, who picked off the pass) trying to do his best Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson impersonation.

  • Great Game

  • This was a very good FBS Rivalry in the 1970s

  • UCLA destroyed OSU in Columbus 17-0 in 1980 when OSU was ranked #1,

  • damn, that was a good sell on the play-action.

  • I was 7 years old when this game was played, and I remember it was the game that got me really excited about the Buckeyes. I followed them closely for the rest of the year, through the dramatic blocked punt against Michigan and the heart-wrenching 17-16 loss to USC. Damn you, Charles White! We were THIS close to a national championship that year! Loved Schlichter!

  • He's my QB coach at my high school...Pretty cool =-)

  • art the dart was a good quarterback, his only fault was he looked receivers down to much and was know to throw the pic ball

  • What a tragic story is that of Art Schlicter. Serious talent utterly wasted. Look at the touch on the ball in the touchdown throw. He has lost everything dear. I can't imagine the dark cloud he must live under. Art, if you read this, Jesus loves you (and will forgive you).

  • UCLA used to play in the L.A. Coliseum?

  • The late Todd Bell. RIP.
