  • Find folks were are very interested in working on the water, are good with people, have good fishing & people skills. Being able to not work full time and still be happy is a good trait, the way fishing is going now adays.

  • When Humboldt squid are caught up here, they are about 150 miles above their historic normal range. Now, they are found all the way up to Alaska. The feeding requirements are immense. We save the stomachs for analysis to examine contents to estimate the effect the Humboldts are having on the biomass in various areas, depths and time. When females may release up to a million eggs, the result and conditions is more like the historic locust plaques.

  • Over fishing is not an issue. If anything, underfishing is more of a problem. Humboldt squid have not been off our shores in these numbers since the 1930's. They have an 18 month average life span and grow to 100 pounds and 12 feet long. The squid thrive on the low oxygen environment created when the ocean does not turn over its low oxygen nutrient rich water with the highly oxygenated surface warm nutrient poor water. We have not had the winter storms necessary to set this up.

  • That is fucking insane... What on earth are the bag limits for your squid there?

  • No limits. When I first started catching them, I set a limit of three per person. I didn't want folks catching too many animals and pounds to keep and throwing the rest away in dumpsters. Competitors heard about that and used it against me, saying 'Go out with (them), and catch as many a you want!' Now, it is a free for all. Fish until you are exhausted or until tthe boat 'has enough'. Generally, over 100. Early in the season less, later in the season, more.

  • how do you normally hire your deckhands?

  • Why would one ant to keep more than one? Simple...they make great crab bait.

There are huge populations out there and very few boats go for them...or can due to weather conditions.

  • they are so colorful... i always assumed they were all that orangy saffron color...

Hey props on responsible fishing/catching...you at least sound like you know what you are doing :)

  • But seriously, why would u want to bag more than 1 per person? they are huge squid that would keep one man well fed for a week. In australia we have a bag limit of 20 per person but we dont get the humbolt squid, most of out catch are about the size of our hands.

Are you not worried about over fishing?

  • That's alot of frickin' squid!
