Varnay was a better operatic actress than Callas. Dangerous words perhaps, but I'm sticking with 'em.

I SAW that production!!! I remains one of the most amazing performances of anything I ever saw..anywhere. Since then, I've seen Jenufa many times, and no one - not even Leonie Rysanek (whom I revere) - comes close to Varnay.

Now have a dvd of the whole performance, quality hardly superb, BUT these performances will never be equalled.

Astrid Varnay una vera grande artista che riesce a catturarci drammaticamente e ad insegnarci come dovrebbero essere tutte le artiste liriche dei teatri del mondo! Al "servizio" del personaggio e non certo della voce che quando è così libera riesce a non esserne schiava! The music is supranatural, Janacek is a genious. Varnay is the best I have ever heard. And I doubt I will ever hear something better in my life.

Don't care really....Jenufa is possibly my favourite opera ever, Varnay is a sensation, even better than Silja who I saw a few years ago.
