@dars2607 This movie is based on a true story chronicled in a book entitled Murphy's Boy by Torey Hayden. Torey Hayden is a teacher and therapist who specializes in treating elective mutes (people who can physically speak but for psychological reasons choose not to). She developed methods for working with children with severe disabilities - this is why she is successful where other were not. As to why it doesn't explain how she is able to get him outside - I think it is just poorly edited.

Wait. First she tells the other guy that her attempts to get him outside failed. And then immediately she succeeds in getting him outside? Why is it not explained what changed in order to get him outside?

For that matter, why is it not explained what is so different about her in comparison to other therapists, why could she get him to talk where others couldn't?
