Just stating the obvious about this soundbite from last weekend where Rick Perry compares himself to the Man of Steel. (I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out)

One thing this video doesn't mention, and that it should, is also that Superman was originally conceived as a big old Leftie. His earliest adventures were fighting war-profiteering lobbyists and the corrupt senators who were getting campaign donations from them. He fought wardens who tortured prisoners. He fought mine owners who refused to install safety equipment. He fought auto manufacturers who made unsafe cars. He fought gambling, poverty, and even alcoholism.

What hurts more than anything, is that the truth to why superman was probably taken to be such an American figure without question. It is because he could blend in with his white skin, and european features :(. If Superman looked different Clark Kent would not be the embraced character who blends in with a change of outfit and glasses. Maybe the Superman story would become about accepting others different than ourselves for their accomplishments and similar goals if he was a different race?
