Ljuba Welitsch and Paul Ulanowsky Von ewiger Liebe Brahms op. 43/1
One of Brahms's most beautiful songs. Very brilliant partnering by Paul Ulanowsky

Dark, how dark it is in the forest and field!
Night has fallen; the world now is silent.
Nowhere a light and nowhere smoke.
Yes, now even the lark is silent.

From yonder village there comes the young lad,
Taking his beloved home.
He leads her past the willow bushes,
Talking so much, and of so many things:

"If you suffer shame and if you grieve,
If you suffer disgrace before others because of me,
Then our love shall be ended ever so fast
As fast as we once came together;
It shall go with the rain and go with the wind,
As fast as we once came together."

Then says the maiden, the maiden says:
"Our love shall never end!
Steel is firm and iron is firm,
Yet our love is firmer still.

Iron and steel can be recast by the smith
But who would transform our love?
Iron and steel can melt;
Our love, our love will have to last forever!"

  • I made a longish comment this morning, but I cannot see it here now. I'll try to think what I said and make it again (unless you removed it!!)

  • No, of course I didn't remove it. Please make another one since your musical comments are so interesting. Thanks.

  • Many thanks, Stasov, for sharing this beautiful song, with full text & translation. Doug --

  • You're welcome! I hope you didn't receive it twice. Sending it was a little tricky. Apologies if it happened.

  • ....and strangely appropriate for 9/11, hard and tender: "Eisen und Stahl, sie können zergehn...."

  • Poignant observation. Thank you. I thought you might like it.

  • How noble and moving this song sounds when Luba Welitsch sings! Brahms's beautiful songs are for the most part deeply coloured and rich in sentiment.Thank You for posting!

  • A crystal clear and expressive voice sings the master craftsmans music. This story progresses you from uncertainty to triumph. The changes in tempo, key and dramatic intensity are wonderfully interwoven with the words, meaning, mood and outcome. A masterpiece, I would say.

  • MAGNIFICO!!!!!Linda interpretacao.Perfeita!

  • Thanks very much!!!

    Me ha gustado mucho!!!

    Thanks!!

  • Have you heard Cheryl Studer's interpretation of this song here on YouTube? It is not vocally impeccable but she is the only artist I've heard in this song that truly takes one from uncertainty to triumph. And her faster tempo adds another layer of poignancy and urgency that slower versions simply lack. It is in Studer's rendition that I hear the musical page come alive, masterfully.

  • Brahm's unique romantic sound flowers

in this rapturous song! Welitsch style is

direct, simple, stunning and radiant in

this performance! Thank you for the

    beautiful gift!

  • Beautiful performance! Thank you for the video;I didn't know about this siger.
