Artist: Thrice
Song: Words in the Water
Album: Major/Minor
Lyrics:
Standing knee-deep in cold water, swiftly moving
Somehow I knew I lost something
Waiting waist-deep I saw a book there, in the river
Waiting for me to find it there
I tried to read it, neck deep, treading water
The tide pulled me out to sea
Then with water in my eyes
The words began to rise from their place
They were beautiful and dread
I reached for them and fed on each phrase
They were honey on my lips
Then a bitter twist in my side
I knew they'd lay me in my grave
"Is there no one who could save me? " I cried
Sinking down deep through cold water and heavy silence
Shadows stirring in the gloom
What things lay sleeping down deep in the darkness?
Woke then to find me in my tomb
Then with water in my eyes
The words began to rise from their place
They were beautiful and dread
I reached for them and fed on each phrase
They were honey on my lips
Then a bitter twist in my side
I knew they'd lay me in my grave
"Is there no one who could save me? " I cried
And when I lost all hope to look
Someone took that heavy book from my hands
All it's weight they set aside
After they had satisfied it's demands
I felt white and black reverse
And the lifting of a curse from my heart
Then like one receiving sight
I beheld a brilliant light in the dark
(from a-z lyrics)
Enjoy :)
This song is my favorite song from Major/Minor. I hope they call off the indefinite hiatus & keep making amazing music.

@kglethean The band itself does not label themselves as a christian band. Dustin is a faithful christian & a member of a church. He writes most of the lyrics to the songs, so there are many direct references from the word. I am not a faithful christian, but Thrice is one of my favorite bands regardless, they make incredible music. I saw them live for the 1st time back in October 14th, 2011. They were amazing.

It's interesting that Thrice does not label themselves as a Christian band and yet this is a very artistic but theological precise presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, specifically as it is understood by the Reformed Christian tradition.

@hilzanne47 That's what it seemed like to me but after thinking it over some I think the book is actually the bible. (More specifically the Torah/Old Testament) Think about it, we should all be damned by that book. Its both beautiful and dread knowing God and forever being separated from his presence by sin. Jesus comes along and takes Old covenant and then offers him a new one- His hand. As he pulls him out of the water that's the accepting of the new covenant. Just my Interpretation though.

@tiredeys My interpretation is that the song is a metaphor for Christ saving us. The book represents temptation and sin, and when he realizes his sins are going to condemn him, he cries out for a savior. The book was beautiful at first, but ultimately killed him. Christ took the book and pulled him from the water, showing him God's brilliant light.
