I see that the line is described as "Inter-City" - this name was introduced in 1966, and from then until the mid-1980s it referred to fast trains between major centres throughout the country. After sectorisation came it referred only to *real* long-distance trains, and was no longer used to refer to any which went purely within the south-east (except Gatwick Express).
Of course, strictly speaking London-Brighton wasn't "inter-city" then. But it is now.
