West of Albuquerque the land turns dryer, less greenery, mostly short small, thin brush, scrub brush, dried grasses, a few cactii (cactuses). The air is dryer, you're also at a higher elevation, 1000 feet above sea level. So at night it got quite cool, even though in the daytime it was 100 degrees plus, fahrenheit.
I passed the petriefied forest quickly, I believe all on one ride. So mostly I just saw what looked like glossy black boulders, or broken columns, on a reddish, hard baked earth, desert. My ride may have had to tell me that we wer passing through the petrified forest, before I'd realized we were half way through the area. And then I came upon the painted desert. Which was beautiful with rocks and earth of all different shades of reds and yellows and browns and grays. It was a beautiful combination of colors, no doubt how it got the name, the "Painted Desert."
One of the odd things which happened on the trip was that for some reason, both when I first went out west, and when I was returning, on my way back east, I spent a week or so, just wandering around the desert. Almost as though it was a place of power, magical, or having some strange attraction for me. I probably backed-tracked across that section of Interstate 40, from Homer to Williams Arizona, 2 or 3 times before I finally continued my journey west to California. One of those things which are kinda hard to explain. I mean I don't feel any special magic for it now, a fond memory, some interesting stories, a unique experience. But no weirdness other than my hanging-out there, wandering around, exploring. Maybe the magic was just that it was just that different, magical in that way???

Thanks CrosshairJack! Yea, a big influence on my life. Yet I'm just getting around to telling it proper. I've always told bits here and there. This is an attempt to compile the stories in a chronologically ordered anthology, that may lead to something more, a book or something.
Thanks for the comments and support! Be well.

Yea, sorry to say I saw most of that area from a car, as I was passing through. But it is an interesting area of this country. Thanks for commenting.

I believe that there may be places of power. It is quite possible that Arizona is one of those places! Be well MIWD!

First image that came to mind when I heard "petrified forest"... actually seeing it was something of a letdown.
