  • FYI EdinburghFixed - that part of the A90 at he start of the clip - cyclists are not allowed on. We're allowed on some parts of A roads.

  • Yes, it's quite annoying too as the dual carriageway is often deserted, as you try to make your way along the iced up cycle path that last saw a gritter... never!

Actually it's only motorways we're not allowed on, in general you can ride on all dual carriageways - even ones much busier than this. If you have the balls, apparently they're statistically safer than riding in town..!?

  • It's a 40mph limit but when I've driven this road, the average often seems closer to 50mph.

I'm amazed that you people have already watched this, I posted it to settle a forum argument about whether you need to look behind you all the time, even if there's no hazard (note the long periods where I'm just getting on with it).

  • I never cycle on the A90 just because its to busy. Had a near miss twice in rush hour heading back from edinburgh, never again will i go on that road. I go through silverknowes, head to the cramond brig which is one of the sustran cycle routes. Slows me down a bit, taking that route, but pretty much traffic free throughout. The traffic looked ok on that day. Like the waving =)

  • I do that too...give a thumbs up...I just assumed from the video it was people he knew from work or something.

  • You are looking over your shoulder in all the right places.

To be honest though, I look over my shoulder more than that, not because it's strictly necessary, but because I just like to know what's going on. And there's no harm in a quick glance.

Unless of course you were arguing the opposite on the forum!?

  • Dunno why, I was laughing for most of that video :) When it first came on I thought you was on some insane downhill section until I realised it was speeded up :P Your hand waving mas making me chuckle as well - I must try that.

Nowt wrong with your safety bubble there. And the A90 looks like a horrible road to cycle along.

  • urbanmanc .. I always try and acknowledge good driving for the same reasons you've just mentioned :)

  • I do a lot of waving, motorists are simple folk and they get a buzz from their consideration (obeying the highway code) being acknowledged, once their effort is 'waved' they are more likely to treat other cyclists the same, how many of them see the 'wave' in their rear view mirror is debateable.

When I approach pinch points and hear motorists behind me slowing to give me room, I acknowledge with a raised hand before they pass which I'm sure they see.

  • how many blooming people did you know!!! Wave, wave, wave...:)
