After a while by : Veronica A. Shoffstal, music:George Zamfir-endless love
After a while
After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn`t mean leaning
and company doesn`t always mean security
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren`t contracts
and presents aren`t promises
and you begin to accept you defeats
with you head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of a woman,
not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow`s ground is too uncertain
for planes
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight
after a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers
and you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye,
YOU LEARN...

  • Hello Anabela,

Thanks so much for this post, this has been a long time favorite poem of mine. I cut it out of a newpaper about 20 yrs ago when I got divorced. I posted on my fridge and read everyday it helped me get through a painful time of my life. I find myself needing it again and thought I would try my luck here. The words are powerful and ring so true. With every goodbye you learn.....

  • Where's all the comments? I love this poem. It has given me inspiration over the years. The music was nice, thanks anabela4f.

  • Just to set the record straight, the poem is an English translation of a longer poem by Jorge Luis Borge titled "Aprendiendo".

  • I feel so much sadness and loss, but I know I will find the strength.
