THE 4 SAFETY RULES: 1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded: FAIL 2) Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot: D. He was aware enough to not point at the kids, but I doubt he intended to shoot himself. 3) Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire: FAIL 4) Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire: FAIL
The version I prefer has #4 as: "Know your target and what lies beyond".
Glock's don't even have an external safety--so I don't consider the use of a safety to be "fundamental". That is more specific to the safe operation of an individual gun.
However, you ALWAYS want to know what you're shooting at before you fire, AND what you'll hit if you miss. You are responsible for every bullet you fire until it stops.
You make a good point, and that is certainly a good rule to follow. The version I cited was the marine corps version. It makes sense, since an m16 does have a safety and only in the last decade did marines have to worry about what is behind what they are shooting at.
My guess is, and its hard to tell exactly from the vid, is that he cleared the chamber before removing the magazine. When he sent the slide home it grabbed a round, then he took the mag out. I have seen this happen multiple times, I was a rifle/pistol instructor in the marine corps. However, even those idiots still had their weapons pointed into a clearing barrel when they did it, and they certainly weren't drowning in the irony of teaching a class on gun safety while dong it.

More likely his desire to avoid further embarrassment kept him from breaking down.
