This year, I (along with my family) will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $100 million.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people; a large and growing percentage of them children.

As you may know, Charlotte was diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes nearly three years ago on Halloween, shortly after her 2nd birthday. She wears an insulin pump that delivers insulin to her body 24 hours a day in order to remain alive and well. In her short four years of life, she already has endured over 7,200 finger sticks, 2,000 insulin injections, and 200 insulin pump site changes. In addition to her rigorous blood testing and insulin pump regimen, everything she consumes must be weighed and measured. For Charlotte, this is a normal and routine part of her every day life; being diagnosed at such a young age, she knows no other way of life. Charlotte continually amazes us and is a blessing to have in our lives as a daily reminder of spirit, humility, and a positive attitude.

As parents, it is our instinct from the moment our children are born to protect them from harm. We must do everything in our power to help find a cure for Charlotte. It is our mission to avoid the heart and kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and early death that is a reality for many people with juvenile diabetes.

There are many devastating diseases in our world right now, and that saddens us. The difference with juvenile diabetes is that wiping it out of existence is extremely attainable and within reach.

Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!

There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime!
