Theresa Wendland and Julia Thut of the International Mounted Combat Alliance demonstrate various wrestling techniques on horseback from Fiore, Kal, and Talhoffer.
@TehFrickinPope In fact, it depends on the context of the assault. At war, indeed, it is often better to capture the opponent in order to ransom him, although since the hundred years war the battles become more and more total.
In this case (Fiore dei Liberi manuscript), the differents plays on the hand to hand without armor from this author (the parts I know the most) are clearly a fight for your life.
@digvoldon Some of the palys show here seems to come from Fiore dei Liberi. This is like a self defense fight system. No chivalry code here. The aim is to win. A lot of people have not a good idea of chivalry codes. Surrender, for a knight, is not a shame. Hit on the testicles is also normal...
An excellent show of horsemanship (horsepersonship?) as well as analysis of historical techniques. These horses are particularly placid under what for most would be fairly unusual circumstances. It really speaks as to the amount of effort and commitment which has gone into this exercise.
Once the rider had been dismounted would the still mounted rider finish him off from horseback or was there some code of chivalry that said the other knight also had to dismount & engage in hand to hand combat on the ground?
Those were some very well mannered horses you had there. I could see were all that throwing around would bother other animals. Also what breed of horse are they?
wow, thats great. well done

@tipntop Wouldn't the chivalrous thing to do be force him to yield then make a buttload ransoming him to his family? Or had that gone out of style?

Holy crap! I didn't even know this was an actual thing! The only way this could be more awesome is if they were riding tigers.
