This is a song that I have long been aware of but I've never learned the words and I have never played it on the strumstick. As a consequence this rendition is somewhat hesitant and uneven at times. However, I think it is an amazingly beautiful ballad and the lyrics are very poignant. I know it from a 1920s Cartwright Brothers recording.

I put this song in my strumstick music book and because it is not well known I thought I should post it here on You Tube.

  • I'm an old rock and roller, but your renditions of these songs have given me a real appreciation for traditional Americana.

  • @stoogemaniac Glad to hear that… Thank you.

  • Nice sound, Lew.

Now, tell us about the strumstick. How many strings? How's it tuned?

    Sould I buy one?

    Do I NEED one?

  • I think this was done by Ian & Sylvia back in 68' I remeber it well.

  • This is what is so great about youtube, being able to be introduced to what may be a traditional song for many and for others a brand new experience. When you deliver with sincerity, as in this recording, we all can share in the joy of music.

    Thanks

    David

  • That was straight from the heart, thanks! :)

  • Sounds good on the strumstick, Lew. As you know, Sarah Otis Gunning used this tune for her song "Come All You Coal Miners", which I learned before I ever sang this song. You've inspired me to do this one now!

  • Western with Eastern sound -- unique!

  • A wonderful performance, as usual. Thank you

  • Cool! Somehow this sound reminds me of a sitar.

and Jeebers, Lew, I finally drop in, only to see that you're drawing on toward 1000!!!...I'll wave my hat from the sidelines!

    Blessings,

    U-K-T
