i can understand what you're saying and maybe it's something that should be challenged. but like you said lame USED to mean disabled, i doubt anyone hears a disabled person being described as lame nowadays but gay still means homosexual, it's the word that's used currently. i don't disagree that there's a difference between somebody who says 'that's so gay' and a 'vile homophobe' but if the word gay is being used and heard everyday to mean something bad it only feeds homophobia.

It IS a negative association, but have you ever called something 'lame'? It once meant a physical impairment or disability, usually to a limb. That word, in its modern usage, makes a strong negative association, using that word for anything bad. And yet no one would dream of instantly labeling a person who uses this word that way as a bigot. I just think perspective is useful. There are real, honest-to-goodness vile homophobes out there and then there are silly kids. Nuance matters.
