Was wondering about the men in the elevator aspect of the scene.. The only rationalization I came up with is that they tried to take him captive and bring him down with them in the elevator, and he caught them off-guard with the hammer.

It's a stretch, but why else would all the dead/unconscious guys be in the elevator with him when he reached the destination floor?
