Fairmont doesn't even make these any more. Starting to become more and more rare because parts have to made for this machine. And Yes, they dig out a hole for a tie, usually in mud holes or compacted ground where the track would normally have to be jacked up higher than would be wanted to slide a tie in.

Wow, that's a machine I don't think I've ever seen. It grinds out a space for a tie, I assume?
