Children and altruism: is generosity and the desire to help people innate or is it only triggered by a desire to receive a reward? Alfie Kohn, author of "Punished by reward", outlines several studies that tend to demonstrate that altruism and empathy - the capacity for feeling distress when we hear that someone else is in distress - is a part of our fundamental nature, and that children can be encouraged to develop this trait.
