The study explains why violence here in Thailand is rare. Mothers are extremely physically and emotionally affectionate to their children, and pre marital sex is widespread and accepted as normal. Also, children born out of wedlock are not stigmatized.

i am kind of new to Stefan and I like much of what talks about. But the research he is quoting is from 1975?!?

There must be a lot of research after that backing up or refuting that study.

Furthermore, there is no such thing as a "secular" muslim country: that's an oxymoron. Using mobile phones, computers, aircraft and automobiles etc. and drinking Coca Cola doth not a secular country make. The most basic ethical and philosophical underpinnings in the collective consciousness of such countries is islamic despite anything you may perceive at the superficial level. Remember: honor and ashame and how you appear to others is the main definer of your identity.

True, honor killings aren't exclusively islamic but it WAS sanctioned by the "perfect man" and that is the bottom line with islam - emulate and take inspiration from that "perfect example." Also realize that islamic cultures tend to be collectivist and honor/shame motivated and so such people won't honestly or openly disclose the truth if it makes them look bad. The "crime rates" - like I said are integrated as "cultural" practises and "traditions" as well as covert.

Honor killings is cultural in south asia. Its not islamic btw but you raise some good points. However many muslim countries are quite secular with islamic traditions and culture but crime rates still remain low.

What we consider as crimes is sanctioned as an integral part of islamic cultural and religious doctrine and the example of mohammed and thus not defined as crimes. (Of course in the PC looney left wing infected West, we're not allowed to say this.) They define as their "culture" what we would define as human rights violations and criminal behavior. Honor killings and religiously sanctioned executions would thus not count in the crime statistics as these are part of "tradition."

of course I'm taking multiple viewpoints in a few short paragraphs - you only have 500 chars in a comment!

Stefbot can appeal to the strict non-aggression principle to bolster his argument from principle but using extreme cases of parental violence and questionable studies to bolster up his premise doesn't help his case.

One size doesn't fit all, for sure.
