  • Fertilization then occurs in a Petri dish. With standard IVF, we take 10's of thousands (20,000-30,000) of sperm and place them around each egg. However, if sperm counts are low, then we help the sperm with a procedure called, ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
