Kingfisher Tours: Dalesman.
Hold on tight for this on board clip of the whole of the record breaking ascent of Shap by 71000 in September 2005, pulling 13 coaches!. It is the best mainline trip I have ever experienced: up Shap and back over the S&C, which even included an 85mph (confirmed by GPS) repositioning run back to Crewe and this clip sums up a truly awesome day. The change in sound quality is because the air pressure from the passing goods (120mph+ passing speed) temporarily knocked out my external mike with wind gag, and the ungagged internal mike took over. There is great lineside footage of this run on PSOV Mainline Steam 2005 Vol. 2.

  • Hi: Shap is a small town on the A6 at the edge of the Lake District. The West Coast main line climbs north to this town from Tebay and the climb is known as Shap. The Long Drag generally describes the southerly climb to Birkett Common on the S&C although some enginemen in the past referred to the whole S&C by this name.

  • What a LEGEND ! .. Simple as, What express was she pulling ??

And just to back up DrKincade's Point .. when she hit Scout green and all the cars, Alot do whistle but unfortunatly, the driver or fireman im guessing were busy !? Haha

  • Hi: thanks for your comments. This was "The Dalesman" , operated by Kingfisher Tours.

  • What an awesome performance by a fantastic loco 5* and into the railways playlist my friend.

This may (or probably is) a stupid question but what record did DoG break on this run, fastest ascent time? fastest average speed? i'm assuming something along those lines

  • Hi: if I remember correctly 71000 recorded the fastest steam ascent, the fastest summit speed and the heaviest unassisted load. In fact, the power output was calculated to exceed that of a class 47 by some margin! It also (unofficially) recorded the highest average speed for steam in modern times during repositioning between Preston and Crewe. What a tour!!

  • I reemember passing this tour on the S&C, with D1015 going the opposite direction. Quite a moment!

  • 4:35-4:52 BLOODY HELL!

  • You mean they allowed a steam loco to open its regulator more than a 1/4" on hallowed "modern" railways lines, shocking! I thought they were restricted to 25mph.

  • Great Video! Great Train! and wow when the freight train passed it looks like your train stopped, and i've never seen a freight train move so quick before lol

  • What Shap record was broken........for steam traction only? I can't believe it would beat a 390, AC Loco, or 2 x D400

  • Is it true that the boiler ie 87% effiicient?.

  • Very impressive piece of work.

  • Wa hey!

  • And since modifications to the middle cylinder it will be about 10% more powerful than ever before! What a beast!
