So what I'm wondering is, how can someone understand what you're saying when you sing in a pitch language?
-
I would like to ask if it is usual for people to talk and make noise during a performance. It use to be like this in Europe but now it is shunned upon.

@12valvepower1 lol which century are you from?

聽起來口音和台灣歌仔戲略有差別,第一次聽,還真有趣。
可惜我看不懂觀賞者討論些甚麼

the audience is too loud!

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that ethnomusicologists currently accept the term opera for these Chinese works. The term "opera" is from the Italian and simply means "work," as in "artwork," and the current Merriam-Webster's definition is "a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment and orchestral overtures and interludes." This seems to fit the bill.

wow. women on chinese opera stage. that is new to me. i thought only men were allowed on stage.

That's long time ago. Now women are also doing chinese opera and in Yue Opera, usually done by women...though there are only a few men.
Nowadays, women impersonate as males and they are very popular especially in TW Opera and Yue Opera.

I think it is a show put up by Singapore part-time actors (ie non-professional)and sponsored by the Hokkien Huay Kuan of Singapore?

It was performed by Singapore Bukit Panjang Xiangopera Troupe. It's an amatuer troupe in Singapore. The actors are fans of chinese opera themselves and they spend their free time learning chinese opera as a form of hobby. ^^

They are not sponsored by Hokkien Huay Kuan and has no direct relations with it.
