Biologically I dont know what happens but as masters say its just returning to our natural state of being. Meditations aimed at emptiness free the mind of concepts inhibiting the typical person.

An article in the british medical journal is now saying that sleep dissorders are being considered as a cause or contributing factor for ADHD. If you know you/or your child with ADHD have poor sleeping patterns it would be worth trying to change them and get your eight (Nine if your a child) hours of sleep a day.
Failing that, you can ask your doctor about Sleep clinics, where they analyse your sleeping patterns and offer advice.
