The most important thing to take from this video is that if you're just starting out, it's better in my opinion to start simple (such as with your portfolio sites). Not all designs should be simple as the two sites I point out. But if you're just getting started. It's best to keep it really simple while focusing on typography, proper spacing and overall organisation of the site. This will force you to spend more time focusing on the User Experience and not worrying so much on graphics initially.

If done right, simplicity can have the most power impact. While other times, being simple can = boring, repetitive, unthoughtful. Like Mike says, it needs to focus on the message. Do that and your site will most likely be fine :D

@casperisdaman Excellent point,..."If done right"...this is so key. What I didn't talk about was why does some simple designs work while others don't. Great point you bring up. It all involves spacing, typography, message, organization, etc. All these things must play a role in a simple design to come off well. Excellent feedback ;)

@casperisdaman The ultimate design is not when you can't think of what to add, but when you can't think of anything else you can remove.

Great clip! This could be the start of breaking down basic, intermediate, and advanced level sites (with emphasis on essential vs. non-essential elements). Your commentary on these would be welcome by all your viewers.
