  • It would be an interesting experiment to teach signs to some naive hearing people using an avatar like this and to others using a Deaf human and see how that affects their comprehension by other signers.

The phonology of this avatar is missing accuracy and fluidity, not to mention a more ASL-like grammar rendering engine. Let's compare this to a man with a thick Southern accent and no knowledge of French grammar teaching French. French people wouldn't understand a thing his students said!

  • @kyleduarte Excellent feedback! We have done some small scale projects comparing signing avatars and humans. We acknowledge that these avatars will probably never reach the same level as a human signer. However it is our great hope that these tools serve as a supplemental resource to support learning sign language. Have you seen our Forest ASL work on our YouTube channel? That is what we hope to achieve with this app at some point. Thank you for your feedback.

  • Come on, why is he signing English??? That's NOT even a sign language. The Forest story was wayyy more ASL. Get Deaf cultural models for signing, pls! Otherwise, this otherwise INNOVATIVE application is a waste.

  • @Crazlavie Thank you for the feedback. This app was designed as a Signed English translator. However it could be possible that if an user did know ASL thus could type in ASL Gloss in the app and it will sign just exactly like that. (i.e. I WENT TO THE STORE vs. STORE ME GO) We do strive for ideas and feedback from important users like you to incorporate ASL lessons/phrases to support this app. We intend to improve the app based on feedback, be on the look :o)

  • I have to say that i really like this app. I've been trying to learn Signed English for a while, and it's great as a pocket reference.

  • @rebe01 Glad that you like the app! We intend to upgrade it with even more lexicon. Be on the look :o)

  • This is Signed Exact English (SEE). Too bad they didn't make it ASL. It makes me happy to know that SEE is being faded out of sign language education, but things like this app have me angry. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

  • Very Good

  • I was inspired to buy this app after having to listen to Christina Aguilera sing at the Super Bowl. I've signed the alphabet since I was 4 like a PRO, hehe:-) I don't intend to learn sign language fluently, & wouldn't expect to from an app, but this is a great start. The settings are divine! I'm glad it's educational since it's addictive. Wonder if it works on a plane.

  • Signed English DOES NOT qualify as a language- it was made up by hearing people. Numerous studies show that people who learn this struggle and bumble over their language, and eventually start signing in ASL if they have the right exposure. ASL is the only true language, so this application is misleading.
