My friends low power Fm pirate radio station. His station transmitted with about 30watts of power. The antenna was a 5/8 wave about 20 feet off the ground. The range was 3-5 miles local coverage and about 6-10 miles fringe coverage. After moving from the location that this video was made, He used a 1/2 wave J-Pole antenna which worked just as well and required less space.

See my other video "Pirate Radio Transmitter Components" on solutions to eliminating buzzing and humming noises. RF feedback is what causes these noises.

  • Was this video about 1990? I have a "R. Scott Communications" 20 Watt PLL Stereo Transmitter. It has worked great, clean of interference and problem free for 14 years! With my Comet 5/8's wave 3 db gain antenna i get out about 10 miles solid. The audio is fantastic! The cost has been about $30 a year over 14 years. The biggest thing in Pirate Radio is to run a clean signal and show, that's what i do! Broadcasting is a Great! Peace.

  • @48alfaone Good guess about the date that the video was produced. It was produced in 1987. A 1/2 wave J-Pole antenna works fine also. It directs the signal completely parallel to the ground. With a 5/8 I believe some of the signal goes up at a angle of about 30 degrees. Nevertheless the 5/8 works well also. Dittos about a clean signal by using audio limiters, filtering all wires before they exit their enclosures, low pass filter and PLL.

  • Important tip! Use a low pass filter! It will help to keep one on the air much longer! For FM, the cutoff frequency should be at 110 mhz or so. Enjoy the whiskey and the music!

  • @jimbobubbadj would cut of frequency of 120 mhz be alright?

  • @MegaRadioBroadcast That should be fine also. As long as the cutoff is steep before 176 mhz, second harmonic of 88 mhz.

  • about 30 watts.

  • @MegaRadioBroadcast thats not alright. you need to be careful because the international distress frequency is 121.5 mhz. you also need to be sure to cutoff before the aviation bands. get one that cuts off at 108, absolutely no higher than 110.

  • nice old school set up!

  • hey look quebec flag at 1:42

  • @jimbobubbadj I would also like a 180 foot tower, use 40 feet now, Haha!

  • @jimbobubbadj Your right !! So many guys run interference and go nuts on the air, then get shut down. I also ran a shortwave pirate station from 1985-87 on 6240 khz AM & SSB, 150 watts. We had a Canadian Government DOC van check us out for over an hour, they then drove off. Had we ran a dirty station RF & Show they would have called the Cops right there! You can still have a great, crazy fun show, just don't go nuts. And the signal must be super clean. I would like a J-Pole!
