My second captive queen, this one has not started a nest yet. but, she is doing ok and today she caught, killed, and ate a fly that i put in for her. queen have to injest some amount of protien to help in the development of eggs

  • well she is not eating the solid parts... she is chewing it into a paste and then sucking the juices out of it. that gives her protien to help develope eggs.

    yes, when adults feed the larva meat, the larva in tern feed the adults.

    I think trophallaxis refers to when 2 adults wasps exchange liquid food, though.

    now i looked upon "trophallaxis" in the american heritage dictionary;

    "Mutual exchange of food between adults and larvae of certain social insects such as bees or wasps."

    and yes, i understand that trophallaxis can be seen in 2 adults, too.

  • wow, i did not know that!

    i thought that adult hornets cannot digest solid food (meat).

    they usually drink nutritious fluids given by larvae, right? (trophallaxis)
